The four elements series came to being through an interpretation of a photo series I worked on. The original series was from the ruins at Agrigento. In those photos it appeared to form letters by the way the broken columns were superimposed upon each other. This led to playing with the hundreds of font types on my computer. I picked arranged cropped type faces into small transperant layers. I proceded to place the type compositions over older works when I realized I should make specific works for the type drawings.
My interests in nature and American Indian culture led me to the 4-elements. Earth came from the farm lands of Southern Holland and a view vineyard shots from Austria. Fire was taken solely at a festival in Vienna whose purpose was to scare out the Winter's Witches and welcome in the Spring. Air was actually the most dangerous. A storm had just cleared and the sky was very dramatic, however I was in my car on the Belgian highway. I didn't want to stop so I just started shooting through the windshield. Water was my first trial in taking digital photos from nature and applying the ideas I was forming. A weekend trip to the seaside of Zeeland yielded both rough seas and calm backwaters.
